I hope to share some of our adventures up the east coast with you soon, but for now, we are back in our home state. The Georgia coast is beautiful and tranquil, and for us, and ideal vacation destination for our homeschooling family of nine.
We’ve camped at Skidaway Island twice this past year, and I must say, it is one of my favorite campgrounds of all time. The spots are large, the moss covered live oaks are enchanting, and the kids love exploring the maritime forest and marsh for crabs and various types of birds. The interpretive center is wonderful, and we enjoy watching the rangers feed the various reptiles once a week.
The closest beach to Skidaway Island is on Tybee, and we usually make the 30-40 minute drive at least two or three times during our stay. We enjoy touring Tybee’s light station, and watching large cargo ships making their way towards the Savannah River. If you are visiting the beach via public beach access, I highly recommend going to the beach adjacent to the light house rather than the one close to the pier. While we enjoy walking along the pier, the nearby beach is usually extremely crowded, and we prefer to walk the shoreline in a lower-energy environment.
Another fun stop nearby is the Oatland Island Wildlife Center. My children love to visit zoos and aquariums while we are vacationing, and this fits the bill perfectly. We also visited the tabby ruins at Wormsloe Plantation…it was truly amazing to see part of a structure built in the 1700s still standing.
The highlight of our trip is usually a dolphin tour, but unfortunately I planned it on the last day of our stay and it was cancelled due to a strong storm rolling in. Maybe next time!
