Create in Me a Clean Heart

caabfalltrees2

Fall is right around the corner.  As leaves begin to fall and the landscape is eventually wiped cleaned, I am praying that God will do the same thing to my heart.

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10

My heart is heavy, friends.  The raw dirtiness of this world makes me want to wave a white flag in defeat.  How can I raise my children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord when the world’s goal is to bring them down?  How can I keep my heart pure for my children in this depraved place?

Create in me a clean heart…this is my cry.  This is my prayer.

Give me a clean heart, O God; when the world around me murders thousands of babies in the womb daily.

Give me a clean heart, O God; when the VMAs are the talk of the town.  When a little girl’s downfall is laughed about and mocked, and a grown father and husband’s role in the matter is hardly discussed at all.

Give me a clean heart, O God; when my community is rampant with immorality.  Lipstick Rainbow Parties are popular in our area among middle schoolers.

Give me a clean heart, O God; when these same middle schoolers are using Vodka Tampons to become drunk without the tell-tale breath.  Again, this is happening in my community, and is probably happening in yours.

Give me a clean heart, O God; when I cannot turn on the television without turning my children and my heads.

Give me a clean heart, O God; when I’m fearful to visit the mall due to current fashion trends.

Give me a clean heart, O God; as I drive down the highway and see billboard after billboard of illicit material.

Give me a clean heart, O God; when lying, cheating and selfishness are commonplace.

You see, if my heart isn’t clean, my children do not stand a chance.  If my home isn’t clean, my children will fall.  Almost every manmade thing in this world tries to lure us away from God.  My children need to see a clean heart in me to survive.  Unfortunately, I cannot just clean it myself.

I need God.  He can and will clean my heart.  And if my heart and home is clean, it will point my children to Christ.  I love this quote by J.C. Ryle about being born again:

To be born again is to enter into a new existence, to have a new mind, a new heart, new views, new principles, new tastes, new affections, new likings, new dislikings, new fears, new joys, new sorrows, new love to things once hated, new hatred to things once loved, new thoughts of God, ourselves, the world, the life to come and salvation.

– J.C. Ryle

Once we are born again, God begins sanctifying us.  Creating in us a clean heart. Renewing a right spirit within us.  Sometimes I feel like I need major heart surgery!  Praise God that if I keep my eyes on Him, He will be reflected in me.  And my children are watching.

5 Thoughts on “Create in Me a Clean Heart

  1. This is so spot on. What a sacred responsibility it is to realize the weight of all we hold as parents. It is all so precious, this sacred trust we’ve been given. And yes, I echo your prayer, and David’s prayer – “create in me a clean heart, O my God…”

I recently came across your blog. Thank you for being a voice of truth!

  2. The world is just SHOCKING to me! Thank you for this glimmer of hope today, Nicole.

  3. This is so horrible Nicole. Thank you for informing me of these “Rainbow Lipstick Parties,” which I never gave a second thought to until I clicked the horrible link. At first, I thought it was just a bunch of teenage girls putting lipstick on in the school bathroom! I was thinking, “Well I don’t approve of young girls wearing makeup, but it doesn’t bother me so much,” until I realized how bad things really are. If twerking and vodka soaked tampons are what youth are coming to these days, imagine, not this generation, but the proceeding generation. Mall clothes are horrible, with their thin material; I can barely find a decent WOMEN’S shirt that doesn’t show my hand when I feel it. Walking by a toy store, there’s half naked VS models on posters, and teenagers- TEENAGERS! Teenage boys are being shown shirtless, and girls snuggling up with them, while wearing the least amount of clothing legally possible! Although the VMA’s were bad, we need to be looking to the root cause behind the horrible show- bad culture, bad parenting, and fame. And just like you, I pray that one day, one day our world will come to its senses. And that we’ll stop this nonsense. Parents will be parents, men will be men, women will be women, and kids will be kids. And until that day comes, I will be praying and wishing

  4. this is so disgusting!! I guess I’ve always known that sin was degrading, but this is a new low. Girls are pressured to perform disgusting acts, just to be accepted/popular?!? apparently our culture views girls as toys to be used/abused. how dehumanizing and heartbreaking!!

  5. Your post just gave me goosebumps all over. I feel the same way, very heavy-hearted when I think about our world. I have been praying a lot for our world, feeling very heavy-hearted and dejected because it can be so overwhelming. It is hard to be a parent these days! I am glad that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and always. I am glad we can count on Him. Thank you for this post, and blessings to you.
